Had this on vinyl back in the day and loved it. Got it on CD and loved it just as much With added material too Urban Guerrilla I had on single. There is absolutely no other band like Hawkwind, and early Hawkwind is the real deal. Before re-mastering this was the defining album of Hawkwind from this period, this version is better still and well worth buying even if you own a CD of the core album.
The icing on the cake is the great price! For those that know the album, the extras are the first attraction - Urban Guerrilla is really clean and blends Turner, Lemmy and Brock behind Calvert splendidly; Brainbox Pollution is better than the perfectly fine rocking version performed around for its use of synth and Turner's jazz inspired sax; Lords of Light single version adds little and Ejection is yet another studio version for which it would be interesting to compare the line-up to that on Calvert's sole album.
Well, that isn't entirely true, but I still do not like the vocals, but I do think they fit better with a more soft psych rock sound. The more folk arrangements do let the vocals fit more in with the song's mood and atmosphere, but still retain the more fun-filled nature this album all around has. I gotta give credit where credit is due, the band does know how to maintain their more jovial attitude.
While every song I have given at least some praise to, I just cannot with Adjust Me. Where in some parts of songs you can hear a tiny bit of a krautrock sound, here we are fully delved deep into that more avant-garde side of the spectrum. With bands like Faust and Neu where that avant-garde music works well, here I think they fall flat in the mud.
It is not fun to listen to, which is a strange thing to say about a Hawkwind song, but it is not interesting either, which is also strange to say about avant-garde music. I can tell this song has inspired a bit more of the weird, and trippy side of psych and space rock, especially with the vibrating guitars and keyboards, but even then I cannot help but think this song was a huge misstep.
Though, despite this misstep, the album does end fairly well with Children Of The Sun. It takes a page from We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago by being a more acoustic song, but it does blend a bit more of that space rock stylization from their other songs. With this, I'd say it ends the album on a pretty good note. The acoustics are all well mixed, and the flute playing here does build more into that nice atmosphere. I am still not a fan of Dave's vocals, they could be so much better even if they fit into this song.
So at the end of the day, this album is pretty alright. I do like a good deal of the songs here and I think the fun moments here can be plentiful. The issues I have with this album though are also plentiful, and I think they make the album suffer more than it should. It's an album that I think, at the end of the day, is pretty much ok, but I do see it as an important look at that more fun-filled, and jammy side of space rock that we don't hear from many people nowadays.
In the end of this long song there is very beautiful soundscape. We hear awesome melodic vocals in the top of powerful music! That some kind of "electro- reggae" continues in "Small Objects in Space". Piece is really boring! Electro direction returns in "Sweet Dreams". Vinyl ends into short "Pulsestar" that is very spacey soundcollage.
Now it sounded little bit better, but have to say former "Carnivorous" is better album. Anyway Hawkwind seems to keep on going, they will have at least one gig at Rebellion Festival, also legendary Hawkfest will be 9thth September! I believe all you UK fans will be there! Next "Void Of Wasteland" is quite typical, very spacey sounding Hawkwind-instrumental. Awesome atmosphere all the way! Very great synths in it and hardrock guitar, also typical melodic vocals! But in "Windy Day" we go back to the positive feeling of the album.
Great guitar playing in it! It really is bar blues with psychedelic flavors. Despite the band name, both "Stellar Variations" and "Carnivorous" are full-blooded Hawkwind albums.
As a matter of fact this album is a big improvement to the previous "All Aboard the Skylark". So it seemed lockdown made good to Brock, at least he seemed to have much more time to concentrate make good songs.
Nothing new into this, but as a big fan I expect them typical Hawkwind album with good songs. This album may not be essential to any proglistener, but really it is essential to every Hawkwind-fan.
It is a bit of a surprise that, with the many bad Hawkwind albums that have been released in the later years, that they can still cull together a decent album like this one. A lot of it has to do with the fact that when the band takes itself less seriously, they seem to have more fun and the result is a better album. The two previously named individuals play pretty much most of the instruments on the album, and that probably helps to streamline and focus their sound.
Everyone else involved with the album are more like guests that appear on a few of the tracks and contribute various vocals and instrumentals. This allows Brock and Chadwick to focus on the overall sound of the album. There is a surprising amount of old-style Hawkwind atmosphere here, especially in the longer jams as in "Into the Woods", "Have You Seen Them? There are the usual, shorter tracks that attempt to glue it all together, and in this case, they all seem to be related with the use of natural sounds as a background to either spoken word or musical interlude-style melodies, like the organic and acoustic "Darkland" which is as organic sounding as Hawkwind gets as the space effects are still there, just deep in the background.
They even take a decent stab at a blues-based hard rocker with ""Magic Scenes" or even make fun of themselves with "Vegan Lunch". Even with the variety here, there is still no mistaking that this is Hawkwind for those that are long time fans. There is nothing here that will offend any of the old fans, and there are some songs that might even garner the band some new fans even though many of them might think that some of the band's styles could be a bit strange sounding to their radio-trained ears.
Don't worry, there's plenty here to keep the space fans satisfied. This album, if nothing else, still proves that this band that has been around for a long time can still put out a fun and decent album and lovers of the new psychedelic bands will be happy to hear from the band that had a lot of influence on those new groups.
This is one of their better ones from their more recent discography. The departure "Brainstorm" involves almost all of their innovative, impressive originality. It's the longest track in this creation but we cannot feel so long nor redundant deeply in it. As if we attended their live on stage as the audience, our inner mind should be merged and unified into their improvised and calculated playing completely. Such old material recorded 50 years ago! Whilst holding their enthusiasm for space rock stances, they would keep good feeling in the melody lines and rhythmic bases.
On the contrary, we can enjoy another alteration of sounds in "Time We Left This World Today" created with repetitive sticky phrases and gradual shifts of their playing style. I'll get em up soon as I can by- cracky! I'm getting pretty old to be dragging my ass out on a chilly Tuesday night to go see Not Really Hawkwind, but I had read that Turner was doing mostly Space Ritual, and a good job of it.
